Scar Management

What is Scar?

scar is a mark left on the skin after a wound or injury has healed. It occurs as part of the natural healing process when the skin repairs itself after being cut, burned, or injured. Scarring happens because the body forms new tissue (collagen) to close the wound, which might not be identical in appearance to the surrounding skin. Scars can vary in appearance—some are raised, flat, or indented, and their colour can range from red to pink to dark brown, depending on the individual and the nature of the injury.

There are different types of scars, including:

  1. Hypertrophic scars – Raised, red scars that form within the boundaries of the original wound.
  2. Keloid scars – Raised, thick scars that extend beyond the original wound.
  3. Atrophic scars – Depressed scars that form when the skin loses tissue during healing (e.g., acne scars).
  4. Contracture scars – Scars that form when the skin tightens, often due to burns or serious injuries.

Silicone Scar Gels

Silicone Scar gels can play a significant role in improving the appearance of scars. Here’s an overview of the stages and the role of scar gels:

Stages of Scar Healing:

  1. Inflammatory Stage: Immediately after an injury, the body responds with inflammation to prevent infection. This phase typically lasts a few days.
  2. Proliferative Stage: During this phase, new tissue forms, and collagen production increases to repair the damaged area. This stage can last from a few days to several weeks.
  3. Maturation (Remodeling) Stage: The newly formed tissue strengthens and matures, which can take several months to years, depending on the severity of the wound.
